We are Sonoma County Section on Aging

Welcome to the Sonoma County Section on Aging website! We are dedicated to providing resources, support, and advocacy for older adults in Sonoma County. The Sonoma County Section on Aging is a coalition of agencies, organizations and individuals concerned with the well-being of older adults and the education of our members. As a network alliance, we advocate for and promote the development, coordination, and implementation of older adult services in Sonoma County.

Whether you are an older adult looking for information and resources, or a caregiver seeking support and guidance, we are here to help. Our members are knowledgeable, compassionate, and dedicated to providing the highest level of service to our community.

Thank you for visiting our website. We hope you will find the information and resources you need, and we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns. Together, we can support and empower older adults in Sonoma County to live active, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

Monthly Meeting

Wednesday February 21st, 2024 9:00 am – 10:30 am

Dennis Pocekay, MD, MPH

The California End of Life Option Act (EOLOA)- Accessing Medical Aid-in-Dying

This talk will cover details and questions to ask regarding the EOLOA, and how to speed access (if needed) along the way.

Dennis’s Bio

Bio (feel free to edit as needed):  I am a retired Kaiser physician who specialized/was certified at various times in General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Sports Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Occupational and Environmental Medicine.  After retiring in 2009 (and until 2017), I was a substitute high school teacher in Petaluma and taught undergrad Intro to Public Health at UC Davis, while also volunteering at the UC Davis SOM.

In 2015, I joined the group advocating for the EOLOA, Compassion & Choices, to work towards and eventually get the law passed.  When it took effect in 2016, access was difficult, and I made myself available as a consultant physician for patients who could not find one.  I continue to give talks on this subject 1-2 times per year, in an effort to aid folks still having difficulty with access.

After the 2016 Election, I decided to run for office; after a losing effort in 2018, I won a City Council seat in Petaluma in 2020.
